In 2020, the Lucid Air car will be much more than just a Tesla imitation. The company’s first model features a functional and stylish aerodynamic shape. So, to live up to the name of this atmospheric aircraft, a glass canopy covers its elegant and spacious cabin. The EPA estimates that this vehicle can run all-electric for 520 miles and generate 1111 horsepower.
In addition to practicality, the Air offers a lot of storage space and a ton of driving assistance. A Lucid Air car sounds more like a cover band from the 1980s than a luxury vehicle. Tesla Model S first debuted in 2006 and sounded like a 19th-century electrical invention.
Legacy automakers can help to electrify the transportation sector. They’ve known about the automotive part for decades. The only thing left is to incorporate the electric components. After years of developing electric car batteries for the FIA Formula E, Lucid finds itself opposite. The next step is to build a car around what it has learned. A highly brief spin of the Lucid Air suggests there is much potential there.
Lucid Air Car Quick Drives
A tour of Lucid’s general assembly and powertrain facilities preceded my lap behind the wheel. Phoenix and Tucson locate about halfway between these cities. Within a few years, Lucid will consolidate all aspects of car production into one campus. However, only the first phase of construction is complete.
Currently, the company assembles powertrains in rented buildings a few miles outside of the facility and deals with certain operations like parts stamping through suppliers. The existing Air Dream Edition trim can build using what is already available. The first production vehicles rolled off the line days before I arrived.
It does not appear that there are any tents here. The entire production plan is in place. I do not provide many details about the company’s efficient packaging of batteries and electric motors. The trade secrets they contain could give Lucid an early advantage over its competitors.
When your eyes are watching, stators get wound, and cylindrical batteries get inserted into modules. You can see how the bus bars moulded into the enclosure. The goal of Lucid AircarAircar is to gain as much control as possible. It means controlling every piece of the Air. The 113-kilowatt-hour battery allows Lucid to have such a prodigious range.
Buildings like the general assembly complex are teeming with knowledge. In every team I met on tour, there were decades of collective experience building cars and running Ford plants. Other significant automakers represent as well. The processes used by Air to transform pallets of parts into finished vehicles are similar to those used by other companies. The method of curing a vehicle body sideways allows it to be better able to treat the interior.
Engine, Transmission, And Performance
480 horsepower produce by the single electric motor on the entry-level Air. All the rest of the lineup power by dual electric motors that deliver different power ratings and all-wheel drive. 650 horsepower is available in the Touring version. So, 800 horsepower is available in the Grand Touring version. This range is suitable for 933 horsepower.
Dream Edition Performance develops an astonishing 1111 horses. Moreover, a Lucid Air can complete a quarter-mile quarter-mile at 144 mph in 9.9 seconds. The vehicle rides on springs instead of air for maximum performance. Its Smooth drive mode was both calm and smooth. The brake pedal felt natural as well. That also operated on its own as opposed to the regenerative braking system.
Range, Charging, and Battery Life
EPA estimates say the Lucid AircarAircar has the most extended range among electric vehicles currently available. Five hundred twenty miles should be achievable on a single charge for the Dream Edition Range model. With a driving range of 406 miles, the base model is comparable to the Touring model.
A 112.0-kWh battery pack makes the Air possible, along with DC fast-charging. Accordingly, the sedan can recharge its battery for 300 miles in just 20 minutes with the plug-in system. A complimentary three-year fast charging agreement also includes the new vehicles. Owners can charge their cars an unlimited number of times. However, its uses for personal purposes only.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
It would help if you did not mistakenly think that Lucid AircarAircar is a luxury car. A lovely feature of the sedan is the spacious back seat, which is a highlight. According to the manufacturer, the standard rear seating can accommodate up to three adults.
Moreover, executive rear seats are available with the option of reclining for ultimate comfort. Almost all of the cockpit’s glass roof will make the Air even airier and increase visibility. On the sedan, a big console at the front, it appears, will provide ample storage space.
The large centre console bin and the retractable lower touchscreen are both accessible. There are two cup holders, as well as a smartphone holder. In addition, its trunk or frunk will contain ten cubic feet of volume, making it the largest electric vehicle.

Infotainment and Connectivity
An infotainment system includes the Air. There is a large upper touchscreen above the gauge cluster that flows out. The lower touchscreen can be retracted into the dashboard and has features similar to a tablet. The Lucid AircarAircar may entice people into the front door purely based on its acceleration. However, that alone will not be enough for a car company to succeed. Moreover, Lucid offers more than its primary competitors do in terms of G-force experiences.
Let’s see if the technology is as good as it seems at first glance. Model S with when-did-they-renew-this-design again and EQS with melted egg business suits. I’m not sure yet, and I’ll have to think about it for longer.
